| C.S. Lakshmi writes in Tamil under the name Ambai. Her first collection of short stories Siragugal Muriym (Shattered Wings) was published in 1976. In 1984 she published a critical work in English, The Face behind the Mask, a study of the images of women in modern Tamil fiction by women writers. Ambai’s second collection of stories Veettin Muulaiyil Oru Samayalarai (A Kitchen in the Corner of the House) was published in 1988. Her articles and papers have appeared in the Economic and Political Weekly under her own name.
In the last few years she has worked on two research projects- an illustrated social history of the women of Tamilnadu, and a Homi Bhabha Fellowship An Idiom of Silence: An Oral History and Pictorial Study. At present, C.S. Lakshmi is busy establishing SPARROW, a Sound and Picture Archives for Research on Women. She lives in Bombay with her filmmaker friend Vishnu Mathur, who also happens to be her husband, in a small third floor flat with a view of the sea. |
