Among the chinese pilgrim-monk-scholars who visited India, Fa-hsien, Hsuan-chuang and I-ching are best known for having played the greatest role in the history of Sino-Indian cultural relation. Rhys Davids (Author) -MLBD Publications
The merits and demerits of the work will be sufficiently plain even from the first fasciculus. But one or two remarks are necessary to make the position of my colleague and myself clear. We have given throughout the Sanskrit roots corresponding to the Pali roots and have omitted the latter. It may be objected that this is a strange method to use in a Pali dictionary, especially as the vernacular on which Pali is based had never passed through the stage of Sanskrit. That may be so; and it may not be possible, historically, that any Pali word in the canon could have been actually derived from the corresponding Sanskrit word. Nevertheless the Sanskrit form, though arisen quite independently, may throw light upon the Pali form; and as Pali roots have not yet been adequately studied in Europe, the plan adopted will probably, at least for the present, be more useful. Still, the work is essentially preliminary. There is a large number of words of which we do not know the derivation. There is a still larger number of which the derivation does not give the meaning but rather the reverse. It is so in every living language. Who could guess, from the derivation, the complicated meaning of such words as ìconscienceî, ìemotionî, ìdispositionî? The derivation would be as likely to mislead as to guide. We have made much progress since then. As the Pali Text Society began issuing editons and translations of the Pali Canon and Commentaries in quick succession, Rhys Davids conceived the idea of the compilation of an exhaustive dictionary of Pali, based on the voluminous basic material that was being brought to light. the work took more than twenty years of devoted labour but before his death in 1922, Rhys Davids had the satisfaction of seeing its first volume published. In four volumes issued over 1921-25 the Dictionary contains every Pali word with its sanskrit root identified and meanings given in english. Carrying over 1,50,000 textual references, the work holds the field, even today, as the best Pali-English Dictionary.

About the Author

Two works on Laya Yoga, Translated from the Sanskrit, with Introduction and Commentary.

This work is a description and explanation in fuller detail of the Serpent Power (Kundali Shakti), and the Yoga effected through it, a subject occupying a pre-eminent place in the Tantra Shastra. Contrary to the belief of certain modern scholarship that has reduced Bodhidharma to a mythical figure, the material presented first proves that historically, there lived a monk named Bodhidharma. The work then goes on to ascertain his role in importing, propagating and essentially founding the culture of Chan (Zen) and Shaolin Kung-Fa. In a revolutionary effort, by drawing several parallels between the culture of Chan and Indian esoteric Buddhism, the study proves that Shaolin Kung-Fa finds its roots in Indian Hatha Yoga. In the process, several historical 'black boxes' have been scrutinized, leading to some radical findings that are certain to go against a few deep-rooted beliefs related to the life of Bodhidharma and provide a paradigm shift in this field of research.

Friedhelm Hardy offered a strong evolutionary sequence for Tamil Srivaisnavism, seen in the light of meticulous philological analysis of the relevant sources in Sanskrit, Tamil, and Manipravalam. Sukthankar was engaged to deliver four lectures on the 'Meaning of the Mahabharata' under the auspices of the University of Bombay. However, the fourth and last lecture was not delivered on account of his sad sudden demise on the morning of the day fixed for it. The Manuscript (Ms.) of these lectures-a veritable treasure to cherish had remained lost to the world of scholars for the long period of fifteen years. It beared the title "Four Lectures on the Meaning of the Mahabharata." This rather heavy-looking title has been abridged here in publication into the substantial title "On the Meaning of the Mahabharata." In a great many places, sentences or paragraphs have been placed in rectangular brackets in pencil. This bracketed material has been retained in the body of this book. Secondly, an alternative word or phrase is occasionally found written with a pencil in the margin along with an underscoring of the relevant word or words in the text. It is thought advisable to retain the text of the script as it stands, leaving such marginal alternatives alone. However, there is one exception: Dr. Sukthankar had rewritten in pencil almost a whole para at the end of the third lecture. This pencil-script is incorporated in the body of the book. A facsimile of this page is reproduced as the frontispiece. An English rendering of the German quotation from OLDENBERG is given in an Appendix for the convenience of the general reader. Karma is simply a power of the universal mind to effect adjustment, to restore equilibrium and to bring about compensatory balance. In the sphere of human conduct the result is that somehow, somewhere, whatever we do is ultimately reflected back to us. No deed is exhausted in the doing of it, eventually it will bear fruit which will return enexorable to the doer. Karma is a self moving force. Nobody, human or superhuman, has to operate it Paul Brunton is widely recognized as one of the twentieth century's most perceptive students of ancient wisdom. The most sacred and most ancient book of India, the Rig Veda, evokes his presence in its hymns. Vedic myths, ritual and even astronomy testify to his existence from the dawn of time. In a lively meditation of Siva-based on original Sanskrit texts, many heretofore not translated-Stella Kramrisch ponders the metaphysics, ontology and myths of Siva from the Vedas to the Puranas. Who is Siva? the author asks. Who is this god whose being comprises and transcends everything? None of the pairs of opposites, nor the sum of his uncounted names, defines him. From the down of creation, the Wild God, whose ancient name is Rudra, is Consciousness. He is the Great Yogi, the guardian of the absolute. His actions are the themes of the myths in which his nature unfolds. By retelling and interweaving the many myths that continue to convey Siva's presence as a living god in India today, Professor Kramrisch unfolds the paradoxes in Siva's nature and thus in the nature of consciousness itself. The magnificent sculptures at Elephanta, illustrated at the end of the book, capture in another medium the presence of the god. Buddhists associate it with Chakrasamvara, a powerful Tantric deity and with the sage Milarepa, who fought a magic duel there with a shaman priest in ancient times. To the Bonpo, the followers of the indigenous religion of Tibet, it is the giant crystal on which their founder, Thonpa Shenrab, descended to earth from the skies. For more than a millennium, Buddhist, Hindu and Bonpo pilgrims have been visiting this throne of the Gods and performing pious cirumabulation around it. John Snelling recounts their difficult and dangerous pilgrimages and analyzes the spiritual significance of Kailas and of sacred mountains in general. But it is also the repository of as many stories about courtly love, self-sacrifice, ethical quandaries, and sophisticated philosophical edifices to rival (or even surpass) Augustine and Aquinas. And unlike Greek or Scandinavian mythology, Hindu mythology is also connected to a living religious tradition and helps to define the religious identity of hundreds of millions of Hindus. As scholars of Hinduism have learned, one is far more likely to draw protests when writing about Ganesa or Siva than when writing about Loki or Aphrodite. Indeed, as we shall see, scholars of Hindu mythology have recently found themselves enmeshed or implicated in India's religious conflicts. Many books have been written about the violence of religion, the religions of India, and the violence of the religions of India. Conducting close readings of stories from Sanskrit, Pali, Chinese, and Tibetan literature written between the third century B.c.e. and the late medieval period, Reiko Ohnuma argues that this theme has had a major impact on the development of Buddhist philosophy and culture. Whether he takes the form of king, prince, ascetic, elephant, hare, serpent, or god, the bodhisattva repeatedly gives his body or parts of his flesh to others. He leaps into fires, drowns himself in the ocean, rips out his tusks, gouges out his eyes, and lets mosquitoes drink from his blood, always out of selflessness and compassion and to achieve this highest state of Buddhahood. Ohnuma places these stories into a discrete subgenre of South Asian Buddhist literature and approaches them like case studies, analyzing their plots, characterizations, and rhetoric. She then relates the theme of the Buddha's bodily self-sacrifice to major conceptual discourses in the history of Buddhism and South Asian religions, such as the categories of the gift, the body (both ordinary and extraordinary) , kingship, sacrifice, ritual offering, and death. The work reveals a very sophisticated and influential perception of the body in South Asian Buddhist literature and highlights the way in which these stories have provided an important cultural resource for Buddhists. Combined with her rich and careful translations of classic texts, Ohnuma introduces a whole new understanding of a vital concept in Buddhists studies.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0991/0445/7067/files/The-Satapatha-Brahmana-in-the-kanviya-Recension.jpg?v=1780947104
valmikis-sanskrit-hb-by-la-van-dealen-author-mlbd-publications
Valmiki's Sanskrit (HB) - By L.A. Epistemology has a long history within Western philosophy beginning with the ancient Greek philosophy and continuing to the present. In Indian Philosophy all systems have its epistemology but Nyaya and Vedanta Darshan has a vast Epistemology. Generally, western philosophers accept two types of source of knowledge – Perception and Inference, but Indian Philosophers have different opinions. Charvaka Darshan accepts only one source of knowledge i.e Perception. Buddha and Vaisheshika Darshan accepts two sources –Perception and Inference. Sankhya and Yoga Darshan accepts three sources – Perception, Inference and Sabda (Testimony) whereas Nyaya Darshan has a different opinion. It accepts four means of knowledge - Perception, Inference, Sabda (Testimony) and Upamana ( Analogy). In Mimansa Darshan Prabhakar Mimansak added Arthapatti in it and accepts five sources along with Perception, Inference, Sabda (Testimony) and Upamana ( Analogy). Bhatta Mimansak and Vedanta Darshan accept six sources - Perception, Inference, Sabda (Testimony), Upamana ( Analogy), Arthapatti and Anuplabdhi. Therefore, in this context, it is a humble effort of mine to analyse such issues like what is Knowledge, kinds of Knowledge ( Prama and Aprama), sources of knowledge, the validity of knowledge, swatah pramanyavad , partah pramanyavad, and theory of illusion. The present book is very helpful for both U.G and P.G students as well as for those who are preparing for competitive exams.

Kabir: The Apostle of Hindu-Muslim Unity (HB) - By Muhammad Hedayetullah (Author) - MLBD Publications

Hinduism and Islam are usually considered to be poles apart especially on religious grounds. But in this work, the author has endeavored to demonstrate that in spite of sharp differences between them, they met on religious, commercial, intellectual and political levels both in and outside of India. Although orthodox Hinduism and orthodox Islam could hardly reconcile, it is shown here that they were bound to accommodate each other however, the real fusion took place with the coming to India of a host of Sufis especially the lives and conduct of the left wing mystics of both religions made the two peoples to come closer through bhakti mysticism. Of the many bhakta mystics who strove in this direction, Dr. Hedayetullah made a special study of Kabir (D. 1518) who dedicated his whole life to the achievement of Hindu-Muslim unity on socio-religious levels. So far Kabir has not only been denied his rightful credit as an apostle of Hindu-Muslim unity, but he has also been misunderstood by many. In the present work, he is shown to have gained the place of honor between the two religions as a mediator and a harmonizer. His efforts were crowned with success, the resultant Indo-Islamic culture and civilization is a living proof.

Kabir was an extraordinary poet whose works have been sung and recited by millions throughout North India for half a millennium. He was perhaps illiterate (I don't touch ink or paper, this hand never grasped a pen) and he preached an abrasive, sometimes shocking, always uncomprising message exhorting his audience to shed their delusions, pretensions and empty orthodoxies in favour of an intense, direct personal confrontation with truth. Thousands of poems are popularly attributed to Kabir but only a few written collections have survived over the centuries. The Bijak is one of the most important anthologies, being the sacred book of the Kabir Panth and the main representative of the Eastern tradition of Kabirís verses. All versions of the Bijak include three main sections called Ramaini, Sabda and Sakhi, plus a fourth section containing a number of miscellaneous folk-song forms. Most of the Kabir material has been popularized through the song-form known as sabda or pada and through the aphoristic sakhi that serves throughout North India as a vehicle for popular wisdom. These two forms, universally linked with Kabir, have been emphasized in this translation. Shukdev Singh and Linda Hess have accomplished a translation of real grace and remarkable accuracy. The introduction and notes explore Kabirís work, place it in its initial context and explore its meaning for modern time.
