The Mayamata is a Vastusastra, that is treatise on dwelling and as such it deals with all the facets of gods? temple dwellings, from the choice of a site to the iconography of temple walls. It contains many precise descriptions of villages and towns as of temples, houses, mansions and palaces. It gives indications for the selection of a proper orientation, of right dimension and of appropriate building materials. It intends to be a manual for the architect and a guide-book for the layman. Well thought of by the traditional architects (sthapatis) of South India, this treatise is of interest at a time when technical traditions, in all fields are being scrutinized for their possible modern application. \n \nThe Mayamata has so for been translated into Tamil and into French. The present English version is based upon the edition, with French translation, previously published by Dr. Bruno Dagens in the Publication Series of the French Institute of Indology (Pondicherry). \n
David Frawley (Vamadeva Shastri) is one of the few Westerners recognized in India as a Vedacharya or teacher of the ancient Vedic wisdom. He is the author of numerous books and articles on Vedic Topics including Ayurveda, Vedic Astrology, Vedanta, Hinduism, Yoga and Tantra, as well as translations and interpretations from the Vedas.

Dr. Frawley has been given many awards for his work in India including the Veda Vyasa award by the International Institute of India Studies. He is a Jyotish Kovid through the Indian Council of Astrological Sciences, and is also the President of the American Council of Vedic Astrology, the American offshoot of the Indian council; He has a Doctor s degree in Chinese Medicine and has also been certified as an expert through the University of Poona for his knowledge of Yoga and Ayurveda. He is presently Director of the American Institute of Vedic Studies.

About the Author

BRUNO DAGENS (b.1935) belongs to University Paris III-Sorbonne Nouvelle (Paris, France). Long-time posted in Cambodia and South India, he has studied Indian Temple architecture in South and Southeast Asia. Besides the Mayamata several editions since 1970-76 (date of the original French one) up to now he has authored critical translation and/or critical editions of Sanskrit invite Treatises (in the French Institute of Pondicherry Series) as well as other studies dealing mainly with architecture of Indian and Cambodian monuments.

The last is entitled The Indian Temple Mirror of the Universe (French original published in Paris in 2009) and its English version co-published by New Age Books and IGNCA, Delhi in 2016. Prof. Degen's is a former honorary treasurer of International Association of Sanskrit Studies (2000-2012).
